Inspiring Writers at MSU: A Journey Through My Writing Process and Experience

2 min read

Writing is often a solitary journey, but sharing that journey can spark new energy and motivation. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at Michigan State University to a writing group, where I shared my story, my writing process, and encouraged others to keep pursuing their craft. This post reflects on that experience and offers insights into how connecting with fellow writers can inspire creativity and growth.

My Writing Story

I began by telling the group about how I first discovered my passion for writing. Like many, I started with small, personal stories and journal entries. Over time, I realized writing was more than just a hobby—it was a way to explore ideas, express emotions, and connect with others. I shared how my early attempts were often messy and uncertain, but persistence helped me develop my voice.

One key moment I described was when I committed to writing daily, even if only for a few minutes. This habit built discipline and made writing feel less daunting. I also talked about the importance of reading widely, which expanded my understanding of different styles and topics.

How I Approach Writing

Next, I explained my writing process, which balances structure and flexibility. I start with brainstorming ideas, often jotting down notes or mind maps to capture initial thoughts. Then, I create a rough outline to organize the main points and flow. This outline serves as a roadmap but allows room for changes as the piece evolves.

During drafting, I focus on getting words down without worrying about perfection. Editing comes later, where I refine clarity, tone, and grammar. I emphasized that rewriting is a natural part of writing, not a sign of failure. Sharing examples from my own drafts helped illustrate how much a piece can improve through revision.

I also mentioned tools I use, such as writing apps for distraction-free work and online resources for grammar checks. These tools support my process but don’t replace the core effort of thinking and crafting sentences.

Engaging with Fellow Writers

One of the most rewarding parts of the talk was inviting members of the group to share their own writing experiences. Hearing their stories revealed a wide range of backgrounds and goals—from poetry to academic writing to storytelling. This exchange created a sense of community and reminded everyone that writing is a shared journey.

I encouraged the group to keep writing regularly, even when motivation dips. Writing improves with practice, and every piece contributes to growth. I suggested setting small, achievable goals and celebrating progress, no matter how modest.

Encouragement to Keep Writing

To close, I stressed that writing is a powerful tool for self-expression and connection. It can be challenging, but the rewards are worth the effort. By sharing our stories and supporting each other, writers can find inspiration and confidence.

If you are part of a writing group or thinking about joining one, take the chance to share your process and listen to others. These conversations can open new perspectives and fuel your passion.

Writing is not just about the final product—it’s about the journey and the community we build along the way. Keep writing, keep sharing, and keep growing.
